A practical checklist to prepare travelers for U.S. entry: determine visa eligibility (ESTA vs B‑2), complete required forms, and confirm passport and insurance rules. Best for short-term visitors, first-time travelers to the U.S., and anyone who wants to avoid surprises at the border.

  1. Determine whether you need ESTA or a B-2 visa — Check Visa Waiver Program eligibility (stays ≤90 days) and your passport's country eligibility.
  2. Apply for ESTA at least 72 hours before travel — Use the official U.S. government ESTA site and complete the full application.
  3. Save and print your ESTA approval — Record the authorization number and screenshot the approval for airline and CBP checks.
  4. Start a B-2 visa application if ineligible for ESTA — Complete DS-160, pay fees, and schedule a consulate interview as needed.
  5. Check passport validity meets the 6-month rule — Ensure passport is valid at least 6 months beyond your planned stay.
  6. Confirm your passport is e-passport compatible — Look for the e-passport symbol; required for ESTA/automated entry in many cases.
  7. Buy travel insurance with medical and evacuation coverage — Choose a policy that covers medical costs, emergency evacuation, and COVID-related trip issues.
  8. Apply for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry (optional) — Enroll early; Global Entry includes expedited passport control and can include TSA PreCheck.
  9. Complete the U.S. customs declaration (Form 6059B) or use Mobile Passport — Fill the paper form on the plane or use the CBP Mobile Passport Control app to speed processing.
  10. Review the prohibited and restricted items list — Check TSA and CBP rules for firearms, liquids, foods, and other restricted goods before packing.
  11. Put liquids over 3.4 oz in checked luggage or use 3-1-1 bags — Pack toiletries in compliant bags for carry-on; larger quantities must be checked.
  12. Declare agricultural items and cash over $10,000 — Report fruits, plants, or currency >$10,000 on arrival to avoid fines or seizure.
  13. Pack medications in original containers and carry prescriptions — Bring sufficient supply, the prescription, and a doctor's note for controlled medicines.
  14. Prepare proof of onward travel and sufficient funds — Have a return ticket, credit cards, or bank statements ready for inspection if asked.
