This checklist walks you through setting up a new PC or Mac—from initial OS updates and security to app installs, backups, and data migration. It’s for anyone unboxing a new laptop or desktop who wants a secure, ready-to-use system.

  1. Unbox and inspect hardware — Check for damage, verify included cables and accessories.
  2. Power on and complete initial OS setup — Complete region, Wi‑Fi, language, and device name prompts.
  3. Install all OS updates — Install available updates and restart until no updates remain.
  4. Create and secure user accounts — Use a strong admin password and enable full-disk encryption.
  5. Enable firewall and review privacy permissions — Turn on firewall and limit camera/mic/location access per app.
  6. Set up antivirus or enable built-in protection — Enable Windows Defender or macOS protections; install trusted AV if needed.

  15. Migrate files and settings from your old computer — Transfer user folders, app data, and verify file integrity after copying.
  16. Install printers and peripherals, then test them — Install drivers, connect devices, and print or run a device test.
  17. Run final checks and create a restore point — Verify drivers, power settings, battery calibration, and create a restore point.
