This checklist helps teams and site staff spot hazards linked to the manufacture, storage, transport, use, and disposal of substances. Use it to organize checks, record findings, and prioritize fixes before incidents occur. Inspired by World Health Organization guidelines. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional.

  1. List all substances used or stored on site — Include trade names, chemical names, and quantities.
  2. Collect Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for every substance — Get the latest SDS from suppliers or manufacturers.
  3. Check SDS for hazard classification and labels — Look for pictograms, signal words, and hazard statements.
  4. Note exposure limits, symptoms, and first-aid measures on SDS — Record short- and long-term exposure info and immediate actions.
  5. Inspect storage areas for leaks, ventilation, and containment — Check drains, bunds, vents, and nearby ignition sources.
  6. Verify all containers are sealed, intact, and clearly labeled — Replace missing labels and damaged containers immediately.
  7. Confirm chemical compatibility and enforce segregation rules — Keep incompatible groups apart (e.g., oxidizers vs organics).
  8. Assess physical hazards: flammability, explosivity, and reactivity — Note ignition risks, pressure buildup, and reactive pairs.
  9. Evaluate exposure routes: inhalation, skin contact, ingestion — Identify tasks that create dusts, vapors, splashes, or fumes.
  10. Check availability and condition of PPE for each task — Match PPE choice to the substance and exposure route.
  11. Ensure appropriate gloves, eye protection, and respirators are ready — Store PPE near work areas and check expiry dates.
  12. Review handling and work procedures for risk controls — Include substitution, engineering controls, and safe work steps.
  13. Confirm spill response materials and containment kits are accessible — Stock neutralizers, absorbents, and PPE for spill teams.
  14. Document disposal methods and approved waste contractors — Record permitted disposal routes and labeling for waste streams.
  15. Schedule training and periodic audits to review controls — Set dates, responsibilities, and corrective-action follow-ups.
