This checklist helps you protect skin daily from UV damage and track skin health. It’s for anyone who spends time outdoors and wants simple, effective sun-safety steps to follow.

0 / 15
  1. Check the UV index for your area — Use a weather app; UV 3+ means take extra precautions.
  2. Plan outdoor time to avoid midday sun — Limit sun exposure between 10am and 4pm when possible.
  3. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30+ to exposed skin — Cover face, ears, neck, tops of feet and hands.
  4. Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before going outside — Let sunscreen absorb for best protection.
  5. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours and after swimming or sweating — Follow the label and reapply more often if active in water.
  6. Choose a water-resistant sunscreen for swimming or heavy sweating — Look for products labeled 40 or 80 minutes water-resistant.
  7. Check sunscreen expiration date and storage condition — Discard expired or changed-texture products.
  8. Protect lips with SPF lip balm and reapply often — Use at least SPF 15 lip products and after eating or drinking.
  9. Wear a wide-brim hat that shades face, neck, and ears — Choose a brim at least 3 inches for better coverage.
  10. Wear UV-protective sunglasses (UV400 or wraparound) — Protect eyes and delicate skin around them.
  11. Choose UPF clothing or a cover-up for prolonged sun exposure — Tightly woven fabrics and darker colors block more UV.
  12. Avoid tanning beds and intentional indoor tanning — Tanning beds increase risk of skin cancer and aging.
  13. Perform a monthly skin self-exam for new or changing spots — Look for new, changing, or bleeding moles or spots.
  14. Examine front, back, scalp, palms and soles using mirrors — Use a hand mirror and full-length mirror for hard-to-see areas.
  15. Photograph and track suspicious spots; consult dermatologist if they change — Note size, color, or shape changes and seek professional advice.
