This checklist guides short, focused exercises to increase reading speed while maintaining comprehension. It’s for students, professionals, and avid readers who want practical drills to reduce subvocalization, build chunking skills, and track progress.

Progress
0 / 15
  1. Take a 1-minute baseline WPM test — Read a standard passage for 60 seconds; mark the last word and count words read.
  2. Record baseline WPM and comprehension score — Calculate WPM and answer 3 quick questions about the passage; note percent correct.
  3. Do a 30-second eye warm-up — Roll eyes, then alternate focus between near and far points to relax eye muscles.
  4. Do a 2-minute subvocalization reduction drill — Read while softly tapping a steady rhythm or humming to disrupt the inner voice.
  5. Practice pointer/finger pacing for 5 minutes — Move your finger under the line steadily; push speed slightly each pass to build pace.
  6. Practice chunking drills
  7. Read two paragraphs using 3-word chunks — Scan groups of three words at once; avoid regressing for single words.
  8. Increase to 4–5 word chunks for two paragraphs — Expand chunk size once 3-word grouping feels natural to widen visual span.
  9. Do two 3-minute speed sprints with comprehension checks — Read faster than comfortable for each sprint; answer 3 questions after each run.
  10. Expand peripheral vision with a center-focus drill — Keep eyes fixed on the center of the line and try to read words at the edges.
  11. Write a one-sentence summary after each page — Summarize the main idea to reinforce comprehension and retention.
  12. Use a 5-question comprehension self-quiz — Include factual and inferential questions to test real understanding.
  13. Schedule a daily 20–30 minute practice session — Pick a consistent time and add to your calendar to build the habit.
  14. Track progress weekly by repeating the baseline test — Retake the 1-minute WPM and comprehension quiz each week to measure gains.
  15. Adjust material difficulty as comprehension improves — Move to denser or more technical texts once you consistently hit ≥80% comprehension.
