This checklist helps patients and caregivers prepare for MRI or CT scans by covering safety disclosures, clothing and fasting guidelines, contrast allergy checks, and comfort strategies. Use it to reduce anxiety and ensure your appointment goes smoothly.

  1. Confirm appointment time and scan type (MRI or CT) — Call or check your patient portal to verify date, time, and exact scan requested.
  2. Tell staff about metal implants, devices, or surgical hardware — Include pacemakers, stents, plates, screws, cochlear implants, or shunts.
  3. Inform staff if you are pregnant or breastfeeding — Report suspected pregnancy or recent breastfeeding before any scan.
  4. Disclose allergies, especially to contrast dye or iodine — Tell staff about previous reactions to contrast or other severe allergies.
  5. Follow fasting and hydration instructions if contrast will be used — Providers may ask you to fast for a few hours; drink water if allowed.
  6. Ask your doctor whether to stop or adjust any medications before the scan — Confirm with your provider whether routine medicines need changes.
  7. Remove jewelry, piercings, watches, and removable metal before arrival — Leave valuables at home and use facility lockers when provided.
  8. Wear comfortable, metal-free clothing or change into a provided gown — Avoid zippers, underwire bras, or clothing with metallic threads.
  9. Gather ID, insurance, and referral forms — Bring originals or digital copies of documents to speed check-in.
  10. Bring photo ID
  11. Bring insurance card or proof of coverage
  12. Bring doctor referral or previous imaging reports if available
  13. Arrive 15–30 minutes early for registration and paperwork
  14. Arrange transportation if you may receive a sedative — You may be unable to drive after sedation; arrange a ride home.
  15. Discuss claustrophobia or anxiety with scheduling staff — Let staff know if confined spaces make you uncomfortable.
  16. Ask about open/short-bore MRI options or timing adjustments — Explore machine alternatives that may feel less enclosed.
  17. Request earplugs, music, or a mild sedative if approved — Discuss approved comfort options; sedation requires a driver.
  18. Remove makeup, nail polish, and hair accessories before the scan — Cosmetics can contain metals that interfere with images.
  19. Ask the tech what to expect during the scan (noise, breath holds, duration) — Knowing steps and timing can ease anxiety and improve cooperation.
  20. Bring a list of recent surgeries, implants, and relevant medical history — Include dates and locations of procedures and implant details.
