Quick donning and doffing steps to use PPE safely in patient care.

• Perform hand hygiene before touching PPE

  Use soap and water or alcohol rub for at least 20 seconds.

• Inspect all PPE for damage and correct size

  Discard torn or soiled items and get replacements.

• Put on gown
• Tie gown securely at back

  Fasten top and bottom ties so gown stays closed.

• Ensure gown sleeves cover wrists

  Check cuffs fit under or over gloves as local practice requires.

• Choose appropriate mask or respirator for the task

  Select based on the type of care and exposure risk.

• Don mask or respirator and secure straps

  Cover nose and mouth; avoid touching the front after placing.

• Perform a seal check if using a respirator

  Check for leaks by inhaling and exhaling per manufacturer steps.

• Put on eye protection (face shield or goggles)

  Ensure full face coverage and secure fit without gaps.

• Put on gloves, pulling cuffs over gown sleeves

  Choose glove size that allows dexterity and coverage.

• Check fit and mobility of all PPE

  Move arms, bend, and reach to ensure PPE stays in place.

• Enter the patient care area only when PPE is secure

  Avoid touching your face or adjusting PPE in the care area.

• Remove gloves first using glove-to-glove technique

  Avoid touching skin; pull glove inside-out as you remove it.

• Perform hand hygiene immediately after removing gloves

• Untie and remove gown by rolling it away from your body

  Turn contaminated side inward to contain soiling.

• Remove eye protection by grasping the straps

  Avoid touching the front; place reusable items for cleaning.

• Remove mask or respirator by handling straps only

  Do not touch the breathing surface; discard or reprocess per policy.

• Perform hand hygiene after all PPE is removed

  Final cleansing reduces risk of transfer to face or surfaces.

• Dispose of single-use PPE in the designated waste container

  Follow facility rules for infectious or general waste disposal.

• Report any PPE breaches or potential exposures to your supervisor

  Note time, PPE used, and the nature of the breach.
