This checklist helps you set up the Pomodoro Technique quickly so you can start focused work sessions. It’s for anyone who wants a fast, repeatable routine to minimize distractions and plan productive Pomodoro cycles.

  1. Clarify your single priority for this session — Pick one main outcome to focus on for 1–4 Pomodoros.
  2. Break the priority into specific 25-minute tasks — Write clear, bite-sized tasks you can finish in one Pomodoro.
  3. Choose 2–4 supporting tasks to fill Pomodoros
  4. Estimate how many Pomodoros each task will take — Use whole Pomodoros; adjust if tasks run long.
  5. Set up a distraction log (paper or app) beside you — Quickly note interruptions to defer them without breaking flow.
  6. Remove or silence phone notifications — Use Do Not Disturb or airplane mode if needed.
  7. Close unrelated browser tabs and apps — Keep only the tools needed for the current task open.
  8. Gather all materials, files, and references you'll need — Have documents, notes, and tools ready before starting.
  9. Choose your timer method: app, physical timer, or watch — Pick whichever is least distracting for you.
  10. Configure timers: 25 min work, 5 min short break, 15–30 min long break — Adjust numbers if you use alternate rhythms like 50/10.
  11. Start the first Pomodoro — Begin the timer and commit to one focused interval.
  12. Work focused without multitasking until the timer rings — Keep attention on the chosen task; defer other ideas to your log.
  13. Log any distraction immediately in your distraction log — Note time and trigger to review later, then return to work.
  14. Mark the Pomodoro complete and note task progress — Tick a box or add a tally to track completed intervals.
  15. Take a 5-minute short break: stand, stretch, hydrate — Step away from the screen; avoid starting new tasks.
  16. Plan a longer break after four Pomodoros — Schedule a 15–30 minute rest to recharge.
  17. Choose long-break activities (walk, meal, brief hobby) — Pick restorative options that reset focus for the next cycle.
  18. Review the session and schedule remaining Pomodoros for the day — Move unfinished tasks into upcoming Pomodoros.
  19. Reflect on distractions and add one mitigation for the next session — Choose one change to reduce repeated interruptions.
