A practical, room-by-room painting checklist for DIYers.

• Measure room and calculate paint needed

  Measure wall width × height; subtract windows/doors. Add 10% for waste and two coats.

• Select paint color and finish; apply test patches

  Paint 2–3 small patches on different walls and check in daylight and evening.

• Gather and buy supplies

  Open windows, run a fan, and use a mask and gloves when sanding or using strong cleaners.

• Protect and clear the room

  Prepare space before any prep or painting.

• Remove wall decor, light fixtures, and outlet covers

  Store screws in a labeled bag so you can reattach later.

• Move furniture out or to center and cover with drop cloths

  Protect floors with canvas drop cloths rather than thin plastic.

• Prep walls: fill holes and cracks with filler

  Use lightweight spackle for small holes; follow manufacturer drying times.

• Sand repaired areas and rough spots; wipe away dust

  Use fine-grit sandpaper (120–220) and a damp cloth to remove dust.

• Clean walls with mild detergent or TSP; rinse and let dry

  Remove grease and stains so paint adheres evenly; allow full drying.

• Tape trim and edges with painter's tape

  Press tape down firmly and remove any irregularities for crisp lines.

• Apply primer to bare drywall, patched areas, or stains

  Prime new drywall, patched spots or stains to ensure uniform topcoat coverage.

• Cut in edges and corners with an angled brush

  Paint a 2–3 inch border along ceilings, trim and corners before rolling.

• Roll main wall areas using even W-pattern strokes

  Use a roller nap suitable for your wall texture and maintain a wet edge.

• Smooth drips and back-brush seams; sand light imperfections

  Fix runs and rough spots between coats for a professional finish.

• Allow first coat to dry fully per paint can instructions

  Check recommended dry time and humidity; rush-free drying prevents issues.

• Apply second coat evenly; repeat cutting in and rolling

  A second coat ensures uniform color and durability.

• Paint trim, doors, and baseboards with appropriate brush

  Use a sash brush or small roller for smooth trim finishes.

• Remove painter's tape at the right time and touch up flaws

  Remove tape when paint is tacky or as recommended to avoid peeling.

• Clean brushes, rollers and store leftover paint; dispose waste properly

  Clean with water or solvent per paint type and store sealed paint for touch-ups.
