- Choose a fasting protocol — Pick one that fits your schedule and goals (daily 16:8, weekly 5:2, 24-hr, etc.).
- Try the 16:8 method (fast 16 hrs, eat 8 hrs) — Common daily option for weight maintenance and metabolic benefits.
- Try the 5:2 method (normal eating 5 days, reduced calories 2) — On fast days target ~500–600 kcal; choose non-consecutive days.
- Try 24-hour or alternate-day fasting cautiously — Use only after adapting to shorter fasts; expect greater hunger and effort.
- Set a consistent daily eating window — Align window with sleep and work to make fasting sustainable.
- Start with a 12:12 trial week to adapt — Increase fasting by 30–60 minutes every few days until target window.
- Drink plain water regularly while fasting — Aim for about 2–3 L/day and sip steadily to reduce hunger.
- Use black coffee or plain tea during fast — Zero-calorie beverages are allowed; avoid sugar and milk.
- Avoid caloric beverages and snacks that break the fast — Any drink or food with calories, protein, carbs, or fat typically ends a fast.
- Add electrolytes if fasting over 24 hours or feeling unwell — Use salt, potassium, and magnesium; avoid sugary electrolyte drinks.
- Plan nutrient-dense meals for the eating window — Include protein, fiber, healthy fats, and vegetables to stay full and nourished.
- Break the fast with a balanced, moderate meal — Start with protein and vegetables; avoid a high-sugar binge.
- Time workouts near your eating window — Train during or shortly after eating for better performance and recovery.
- Time medications with doctor guidance — Consult healthcare provider if on insulin, blood pressure meds, or other prescriptions.
- Log symptoms, weight, sleep, and energy — Keep a simple daily note to spot trends and make adjustments.
- Stop fasting and seek help for severe symptoms — Get help for fainting, severe dizziness, palpitations, confusion, or weakness.
