- Identify each plant species — Label with species name and basic care needs for reference
- Match plant to light requirements — Determine if plant prefers bright direct, bright indirect, or low light
- Check window direction and daily sun hours — Note direct vs. indirect sun and peak daylight times
- Test soil moisture before watering — Avoid scheduled watering; check chance of overwatering first
- Insert finger 1–2 inches into soil to check dampness — Water only if the soil at that depth feels dry for the species
- Water thoroughly until water drains from the pot — Water slowly so all roots are moistened; discard excess from saucer
- Ensure pot has a working drainage hole — Use pots with holes to prevent waterlogging and root rot
- Clear any blocked drainage holes — Unblock with a thin tool or repot if holes are permanently blocked
- Maintain appropriate humidity levels — Adjust for tropical vs. dry-habitat plants to reduce stress
- Group humidity-loving plants or use a pebble tray/humidifier — Create localized humidity without overwatering foliage
- Fertilize during the active growth season — Use a balanced fertilizer every 4–6 weeks in spring–summer
- Inspect plants weekly for pests and disease — Check undersides, new growth, and soil surface for issues
- Prune dead or yellowing leaves — Cut back to healthy tissue to prevent disease spread
- Check for repotting signs — Watch for roots showing, slow growth, or salt crust on soil
- Repot into a slightly larger pot with fresh potting mix — Move up one pot size and refresh soil when root-bound
- Practice basic propagation — Take stem or leaf cuttings in the growing season using clean tools
