Homecoming Checklist

Easy 23 items · 2 weeks

Homecoming week runs on school deadlines. At many schools ticket sales close before the dance, a date from another school often needs a signed guest form turned in ahead of time, and the dress code is in the student handbook or the ticket announcement, not posted at the door. Miss one of those and the outfit stops mattering.

This list is for students going to the dance and for the parents helping them get there. Start it the day the dance date is announced. The early items are the paperwork and the money, and the outfit, flowers and photos come after.

Bring your student ID even if you bought the ticket online. Many schools check it at the door, and some will not let a student back in once they leave the building.

  1. Find the dance date, start time and end time — Check the school website or the morning announcements, and note the game and spirit week days too.
  2. Find out when ticket sales close — Some schools sell no tickets at the door, so missing the deadline means missing the dance.
  3. Clear any fines or holds that block a ticket purchase — Overdue library books, unpaid fees and attendance problems can stop a sale at some schools.
  4. Buy your ticket
  5. Turn in a guest form if your date goes to a different school — Many need a parent signature, and some need sign-off from your date's school, so allow a few days.
  6. Read the dress code
  7. Set a budget with whoever is paying — Add up ticket, outfit, flowers, dinner and photos before buying any one of them.
  8. Decide whether you are going with a date, a group or both
  9. Pick your outfit and try it on with the shoes — Dance in the shoes at home for ten minutes. Blisters show up fast on a gym floor.
  10. Book any alterations
  11. Order a corsage, boutonniere or mum — Florists get busy the week of homecoming. In Texas and parts of the South the custom is a mum, which can take a while to make, so start early.
  12. Tell the florist the outfit colors
  13. Reserve dinner for the group, or plan a dinner at someone's house — Restaurants near the school can fill up early on dance night.
  14. Choose a photo spot and a time to meet there — Allow about 45 minutes. Parks and school grounds can get crowded in the hour before the dance.
  15. Plan the ride there and the ride home — Name a driver for each direction and the time you will be picked up.
  16. Agree on a curfew and any after-party plans with parents
  17. Plan your hair, makeup or haircut appointments
  18. Charge your phone fully on the afternoon of the dance
  19. Pack a small bag with your ticket, student ID and some cash — Add a phone charger, lip balm and any medication you need.
  20. Eat something before you leave — Dinner may be early or skipped, and a crowded gym is hot.
  21. Check the re-entry rule before stepping outside during the dance
  22. Text your ride when the dance ends
  23. Hang up the outfit and return any rentals on time
