A practical checklist to help people monitor their menstrual cycle and identify fertile days using basal body temperature, cervical mucus, and apps. Good for those tracking fertility for conception or natural contraception, and for anyone wanting better cycle awareness.

- Learn fertility awareness basics — Understand BBT, cervical mucus, cycle phases, and what 'fertile window' means.
- Prepare tracking tools
- Install and set up a cycle-tracking app — Choose an app that supports BBT, symptoms, and charting.
- Buy a basal body thermometer — Get a thermometer accurate to 0.1°C (0.1°F) for reliable BBT readings.
- Take basal body temperature each morning — Measure immediately on waking, before getting out of bed, at the same time daily.
- Record temperature in your app or paper chart — Enter the temp, wake time, and any interruptions for accurate charts.
- Observe and note cervical mucus daily — Note texture, color, and amount; 'egg-white' stretchy mucus signals high fertility.
- Check cervical position once per day — Optional: note high/soft/open vs low/firm/closed to supplement mucus and BBT.
- Use ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) around expected fertile days — Begin testing a few days before expected ovulation and follow kit instructions.
- Log other fertility signs (ovulation pain, spotting, libido) — Record symptoms that may correlate with ovulation for fuller pattern analysis.
- Identify your fertile window using combined signs — Combine BBT shifts, mucus peak, and OPK results to pinpoint fertile days.
- Plan intercourse or contraception based on your goals — Schedule or avoid sex during the fertile window according to your intentions.
- Track at least three cycles before drawing conclusions — Look for repeating patterns across cycles; one cycle is rarely definitive.
- Back up your data and set daily reminders — Enable cloud sync or export charts; set an alarm for morning BBT checks.
- Consult a gynecologist for persistent irregularities or concerns — See a clinician for severe pain, missed periods, very irregular cycles, or fertility worries.
