• Update your registration if you moved or changed your name

• Use FVAP.gov if you are in the military, a military family member or a US citizen living overseas

The Federal Post Card Application registers you and requests an absentee ballot on one form.

• Decide how you will vote: early in person, by mail, or on Election Day

Not every state offers every option, so check which ones yours has.

• Request a mail ballot before your state's deadline

A few states mail a ballot to every registered voter. In the rest you have to ask for one. Your state election office has the request form and the deadline.

• Follow the envelope instructions exactly, including any signature or witness line

A missing signature is one of the common reasons a mail ballot gets set aside.

• Return the mail ballot early and track it online if your state offers tracking

Check your state's return deadline with its election office, including whether the ballot has to arrive by then. Leave at least a week for the mail.

• Find your early voting locations and their hours
• Confirm your Election Day polling place

Polling places move between elections. Check it the week before rather than going from memory.

• Check whether your state asks for ID at the polls, and which kinds it accepts

Your state election office lists the accepted IDs. Even in a state with no ID rule, federal law requires ID from some first-time voters who registered by mail.

• Look up your sample ballot

Many county election offices post one online, so you can read the local races and ballot questions in advance.

• Write down your choices to take with you

Rules on phones and photos inside the polling place vary by state, so a paper note is the safer option.

• Ask your employer about time off to vote

Some states require employers to give workers time to vote. Rules on pay and notice differ.

• Plan your trip to the polls: the time, a ride and any child care

Morning and after-work hours usually have the longest lines. Bring water if you expect a wait.

• Arrange help at the polls if you need it

If you need help because of blindness, a disability or trouble reading or writing, section 208 of the Voting Rights Act lets you pick who helps you. The only people excluded are your employer or its agent, and an officer or agent of your union.

• Leave campaign shirts, hats and buttons at home

Many states ban campaign material within a set distance of a polling place.

• Stay in line if the polls close while you are waiting

In general, anyone already in line at closing time gets to vote.

• Ask for a provisional ballot if your name is not on the list

First ask the poll worker to check that you are at the right precinct.

• Read both sides of every ballot page before you turn it in

Local races and ballot questions often sit on the back.

• Follow up on a provisional ballot by the deadline the poll worker gives you

In some states you have to show ID or sign a form within a few days for it to count. Federal law also entitles you to written instructions for checking whether it was counted.
