This checklist helps homeowners and renters downsize and declutter before a move or to simplify living spaces. It guides room-by-room purging, furniture sizing, selling/donating, sentimental decisions, packing priorities, and storage evaluation.

  1. List all rooms and storage spaces to declutter — Include closets, attic, basement, garage, and seldom-used rooms.
  2. Prioritize rooms by move difficulty and daily use — Tackle high-traffic and hardest-to-move rooms first.
  3. Measure new home doorways, hallways, and room dimensions — Record width, height, and clearance to plan furniture fit.
  4. Measure each major furniture piece and note disassembly needs — Record length, width, height and whether it breaks down for transport.
  5. Compare furniture dimensions to new space and tag keep/sell/donate — Mark items that won't fit or will block access in the new layout.
  6. Create labeled sorting zones: Keep, Sell, Donate, Recycle, Trash — Use boxes or taped floor areas in each room for faster sorting.
  7. Sort one room at a time and move items into zones — Work in short timed sessions to avoid decision fatigue.
  8. Photograph and list sellable items with clear descriptions — Take multiple angles and note condition to speed sales.
  9. Post items on selling platforms and schedule pickups or shipping — Choose platforms with local pickup or easy shipping options.
  10. Contact charities, confirm pickup or drop-off rules, and obtain receipts — Ask about pickup windows and get donation receipts for taxes.
  11. Evaluate storage unit options for overflow or temporary hold — Compare size, cost, climate control, and access hours.
  12. Pack and box keep items by priority and inventory each box — Label boxes with contents and destination room for easy unpacking.
  13. Pack an essentials box to open first on moving day — Include toiletries, chargers, basic kitchen items, and paperwork.
  14. Pack seasonal or rarely used items separately and label clearly — Store seasonals on top or in a storage unit for easy access later.
  15. Create a sentimental item strategy and set limits — Decide what to keep, photograph, digitize, or gift to family.
  16. Digitize or photograph sentimental items and store images securely — Save high-res photos and notes to cloud storage for long-term access.
  17. Schedule pickups, moving day logistics, and transport for large items — Book movers, truck rentals, and coordinate times for sell/donate pickups.
  18. Do a final walk-through to confirm discard/sell/donate decisions — Remove final trash, consolidate donation piles, and recheck measurements.
