A quick pre-ride safety and maintenance checklist for cyclists of all levels. Use it before every ride to confirm helmet fit, tyre pressure, brakes, lights, hydration, route, and essential tools.

  1. Check helmet fit — Adjust straps and retention so helmet sits level and snug.
  2. Inspect tyres and wheels — Quickly look for cuts, bulges, loose spokes, or debris.
  3. Measure tyre pressure with a gauge — Use the PSI/bar printed on the tyre sidewall.
  4. Pump tyres to correct pressure — Inflate evenly and avoid overinflation.
  5. Check tyre tread and sidewalls for cuts or objects — Run fingers (carefully) along tread and inspect sidewalls.
  6. Test brakes for strong, even engagement — Squeeze both brakes while rolling slowly to confirm stopping power.
  7. Inspect brake pads and cables/hose for wear — Pads should have grooves; cables not frayed and hydraulics not leaking.
  8. Check lights and reflectors (front and rear) — Turn lights on to confirm brightness and flashing modes.
  9. Secure quick-release skewers and axle nuts — Ensure levers are closed and pointed rearward or tucked in.
  10. Lubricate chain and shift through gears — Apply lube, pedal to move chain, and wipe off excess.
  11. Plan route and check weather and traffic — Choose safer roads, note shelter points, and check forecasts.
  12. Pack water and energy snacks — Bring at least one bottle and quick carbs for the ride.
  13. Carry phone, ID, multi-tool, tire levers, and spare tube — Store items in a saddle bag or jersey pocket for quick access.
