This checklist helps you manage cold and flu symptoms at home safely and comfortably. It’s for adults and caregivers who need practical steps for rest, hydration, symptom monitoring, OTC care, and when to seek medical help.

  1. Set up a comfortable rest area — Choose a quiet, ventilated spot with pillows, blanket, and easy access to supplies.
  2. Place tissues and a trash bin within reach — Keep used tissues contained to reduce germs and ease cleanup.
  3. Keep water, thermometer, and meds within arm's reach — Store supplies on a bedside table to avoid getting up too often.
  4. Rest and nap frequently — Prioritize sleep and low activity to support recovery.
  5. Sip fluids regularly throughout the day — Aim for water, broth, or electrolyte drinks to prevent dehydration.
  6. Take OTC fever or pain relievers as directed — Follow label dose and age limits for acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
  7. Use saline nasal spray or rinse to relieve congestion — Use several times daily to clear nasal passages safely.
  8. Run a humidifier or inhale steam to loosen mucus — Use warm steam or a cool-mist humidifier to ease coughing and congestion.
  9. Gargle warm salt water for sore throat — Mix 1/4–1/2 teaspoon salt in 8 oz warm water, gargle and spit.
  10. Monitor and record temperature twice daily — Check morning and evening to track fever trends.
  11. Track symptoms and note any changes — Write down symptom onset, severity, and any new signs to share with your provider.
  12. Seek emergency care for severe symptoms — Call emergency services for difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, or bluish lips.
  13. Call your healthcare provider for prolonged or worsening symptoms — Contact them if fever lasts >48 hours, symptoms rapidly worsen, or you have high-risk conditions.
  14. Stay home and avoid contact until you're no longer contagious — Remain home at least 24 hours after fever ends without fever-reducing meds.
  15. Practice hand hygiene and wear a mask around others — Wash hands often and mask to reduce spread when needed.
  16. Restock essentials and check expirations — Replace tissues, fluids, OTC meds, and thermometer batteries before they're needed.
