  1. Test all smoke detectors — Press each unit's test button until the alarm sounds; test monthly.
  2. Test all carbon monoxide detectors — Use the test button or follow manufacturer steps to confirm operation.
  3. Replace batteries in smoke and CO detectors — Install fresh alkaline or recommended batteries and record the date.
  4. Inspect fire extinguishers visually — Check the pressure gauge, safety pin, and service tag for date.
  5. Service or replace expired/low fire extinguishers — Tag for professional service or buy replacement if expired or undercharged.
  6. Plan primary and secondary escape routes — Include two exits for each room and a meeting point outside.
  7. Draw and post an escape map near exits — Post copies by doors and in bedrooms so everyone can see it.
  8. Conduct an escape drill with household members — Practice routes and timing at least once a year, include pets.
  9. Clear and inspect escape routes for obstructions — Remove furniture, toys, or storage that block doors and windows.
  10. Inspect electrical cords, outlets, and the breaker panel — Look for frayed cords, warm outlets, burn marks, or frequently tripped breakers.
  11. Test GFCI and AFCI outlets and reset breakers if needed — Use the built-in test/reset buttons and label any tripping circuits.
  12. Secure hazardous materials and medicines in locked storage — Store cleaners, pesticides, and meds up high or in a locked cabinet.
  13. Check gas appliances, vents, and smell for leaks — Inspect vents for blockage; if you smell gas, leave and call emergency services.
  14. Review home insurance and update inventory with photos — Record valuables, serial numbers, and update coverage as needed.
