A practical checklist to ready your home and nursery before your newborn arrives. Ideal for expectant parents and caregivers, it focuses on safe sleep, car seat and cot setup, and essential safety checks.

  1. Assemble and position cot in the nursery — Place cot away from windows, heaters, and cords; leave space to access all sides.
  2. Fit a firm, well‑fitting mattress into the cot — Max 20mm gap between mattress and cot sides; mattress must be flat and firm.
  3. Use only a fitted sheet and remove pillows, bumpers, and soft toys — Keep sleep surface clear to reduce SIDS risk; no loose bedding for infants.
  4. Install blackout blinds or room‑darkening curtains — Ensure full coverage for daytime naps and better night sleep.
  5. Secure blind and curtain cords out of reach — Use cord cleats or remove loops to prevent strangulation hazards.
  6. Check and test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors — Test alarms, replace batteries, and confirm at least one detector near nursery.
  7. Install and correctly fit the infant car seat — Follow the manual and get a professional fitting check if unsure.
  8. Prepare and pack the hospital bag for parent and baby — Include ID, birth plan, chargers, spare clothes, nappies and newborn outfit.
  9. Set up a nappy changing station and stock supplies — Include changing mat, nappies, wipes, nappy sack/bin and cream within reach.
  10. Wash new bedding, clothes, and muslins in baby‑safe detergent — Use fragrance‑free detergent and follow garment care labels.
  11. Secure heavy furniture and anchor tall items to the wall — Use brackets or straps on bookcases and dressers to prevent tipping.
  12. Install and test a baby monitor; position it safely — Mount camera out of baby’s reach and away from loose cords; test range.
  13. Set a safe room temperature and ventilation for sleep — Aim for a comfortable 16–20°C and avoid overdressing the baby.
  14. Create and note a safe sleep plan (back‑to‑sleep, room‑sharing rules) — Plan consistent sleep routines; avoid bed‑sharing and sofas for naps.
  15. Prepare a basic baby first‑aid kit and record emergency numbers — Include thermometer, plasters, antiseptic, and local emergency contacts.
  16. Childproof outlets, cover sharp edges, and clear small objects — Check floor level and low shelves for choking hazards and secure outlets.
  17. Place a soft night light and a nursery thermometer — Use a low‑glow light for night feeds and monitor room temperature.
