This checklist walks allotment holders through seasonal preparation tasks from clearing and soil testing to sowing plans and harvest storage. It’s for new and experienced growers who want an organized seasonal plan to maximize yields and reduce problems.

  1. Clear plot of debris and weeds — Cut back dead growth, pull annual weeds, and remove litter to start with a tidy plot.
  2. Remove perennial roots and invasive plants — Dig out roots or use targeted removal to prevent regrowth.
  3. Compost cleared vegetation or take to green waste — Compost healthy material; dispose of diseased or invasive plants responsibly.
  4. Test soil pH and nutrient levels — Use a home kit or send samples to a lab for N-P-K and pH readings.
  5. Amend soil according to test results — Add lime, sulfur, compost or specific fertilizers as recommended by test.
  6. Plan crop rotation for beds — Map four-year rotation groups: brassicas, legumes, roots, and leafy crops.
  7. Create seasonal sowing calendar — List sowing and planting dates for each bed and crop group.
  8. Plan spring and early-summer sowings — Schedule early sowings and succession plantings for continuous harvests.
  9. Plan late-summer and autumn sowings — Include fast-maturing crops and fall brassicas for autumn harvests.
  10. Plan overwinter and cold-tolerant sowings — Choose hardy varieties and note where protection or cloches are needed.
  11. Map companion planting pairings — Assign beneficial neighbors to each crop bed to improve growth and deter pests.
  12. Pair legumes near heavy feeders to fix nitrogen — Use peas or beans next to brassicas or leafy crops where beneficial.
  13. Plant marigolds or aromatic herbs to deter pests — Scatter pest-deterring plants around beds and entries.
  14. Set up irrigation and test the water source — Install drip or soaker lines and run a full test of pressure and timers.
  15. Maintain and sharpen tools — Sharpen blades, oil moving parts, and repair handles before heavy use.
  16. Install pest netting and supports — Fit hoops or frames and secure netting to protect seedlings and fruit.
  17. Mulch beds to conserve moisture — Apply organic mulch 5–7cm deep after planting to suppress weeds and retain water.
  18. Label beds and update the plot map — Mark varieties and dates on stakes and record them on your plot map.
  19. Plan harvest storage and preservation — Decide on freezing, canning, drying or cool storage for each crop.
  20. Schedule regular pest and disease checks — Set weekly inspections and actions for common allotment pests.
  21. Review seed inventory and order missing seeds — Cross-check seed stocks with your sowing calendar and order early.
