This checklist guides you through setting up a functional home recording studio, from room treatment and monitors to DAW and mic setup. It’s for musicians, podcasters, and home producers who want a reliable, safe, and well-organized workspace.

- Select and clear a dedicated recording space — Choose a quiet, low-traffic room and remove clutter that causes reflections.
- Check electrical outlets and add a power conditioner — Ensure grounded outlets and protect gear from spikes with a conditioner or surge protector.
- Treat room acoustics — Plan absorption and trapping before placing monitors.
- Identify and mark first-reflection points — Use a mirror at ear height while seated to find points where reflections hit the listener.
- Install bass traps and broadband absorbers — Start with corner bass traps and place absorbers at reflection points on walls.
- Place studio monitors on stands and toe them toward the listening position — Position tweeters at ear height and form an equilateral triangle with the listener.
- Add monitor isolation pads and set listening distance — Decouple monitors from surfaces and adjust distance for a focused stereo image.
- Choose an audio interface that matches your I/O and sample rate needs — Pick the correct number of mic/line inputs, preamp quality, and preferred connection (USB/Thunderbolt).
- Install audio interface drivers and firmware — Download latest drivers from the manufacturer and follow firmware update steps.
- Install and set up your DAW software — Authorize the DAW, install updates, and set default project folder locations.
- Configure DAW audio settings: sample rate, buffer size, and routing — Use 44.1/48kHz for most projects, set buffer 128–512 samples for balance of latency and stability.
- Choose microphones: compare condenser vs dynamic for the source — Use condensers for vocals/acoustic; dynamics for drums, guitar amps, and loud sources.
- Mount microphone, add a pop filter, and set input gain — Position mic 6–12 inches from source and set gain to peak around -6 to -12 dBFS.
- Connect and test headphones and monitors; set safe listening levels — Start at low volume, verify signal path, and avoid long exposure to loud levels.
- Organize and label cables; use ties and color codes — Bundle cables, label each end, and leave service slack for reconfiguration.
