- Create a full backup of the old device — Use cloud backup and/or a local PC backup to capture apps, settings, photos, and messages.
- Verify the backup integrity — Confirm backup date, file size, or test a sample restore to ensure completeness.
- List important accounts and app logins — Note email, banking, subscription, and social accounts plus password/backup codes.
- Choose a data transfer method — Pick direct cable, Wi‑Fi transfer, cloud restore, or PC-based migration tools.
- Update old device OS and apps before transferring — Install pending updates to avoid compatibility issues during migration.
- Transfer data to the new device using the chosen method — Follow manufacturer or OS-specific steps for a full device transfer or restore.
- Insert SIM or activate the eSIM on the new device — Move the physical SIM or follow carrier eSIM activation steps to get cellular service.
- Transfer or reconfigure two‑factor authentication (2FA) — Export authenticator accounts or scan QR codes; update phone numbers for SMS 2FA.
- Reinstall and sign into apps on the new device — Use the app store and re-enter credentials for apps that didn't auto-restore.
- Restore messaging apps and check chat histories — Restore WhatsApp/Signal backups from iCloud/Google Drive or local files where applicable.
- Verify contacts, calendars, and photos synced correctly — Open contacts, calendar, and photo library to confirm entries and recent items are present.
- Reconnect Bluetooth devices, wearables, and smart‑home links — Pair watches, headphones, and relink smart-home accounts to the new phone.
- Update the OS and apps on the new device — Install the latest system and app updates to ensure security and compatibility.
- Test essential device functions — Make a call, send an SMS, use mobile data, test camera, GPS, and Bluetooth connectivity.
- Create a fresh backup of the new device — Back up now that everything is set up to preserve the migrated state.
- Remove SIM and microSD from the old device — Physically remove cards before wiping or handing the device over.
- Sign out of accounts and disable activation locks on the old device — Sign out of iCloud/Google and turn off Find My Device / Activation Lock before reset.
- Factory reset and securely wipe the old device — Use the device's factory reset option to erase personal data before passing it on.
- Securely erase external storage (e.g., SD card) — Format or overwrite removable storage to remove residual personal files.
- Collect accessories, chargers, and packaging for sale or donation — Gather cables, cases, and original box to include or recycle as needed.
