- Test all smoke detectors — Press each unit's test button until the alarm sounds; test monthly.
- Test all carbon monoxide detectors — Use the test button or follow manufacturer steps to confirm operation.
- Replace batteries in smoke and CO detectors — Install fresh alkaline or recommended batteries and record the date.
- Inspect fire extinguishers visually — Check the pressure gauge, safety pin, and service tag for date.
- Service or replace expired/low fire extinguishers — Tag for professional service or buy replacement if expired or undercharged.
- Plan primary and secondary escape routes — Include two exits for each room and a meeting point outside.
- Draw and post an escape map near exits — Post copies by doors and in bedrooms so everyone can see it.
- Conduct an escape drill with household members — Practice routes and timing at least once a year, include pets.
- Clear and inspect escape routes for obstructions — Remove furniture, toys, or storage that block doors and windows.
- Inspect electrical cords, outlets, and the breaker panel — Look for frayed cords, warm outlets, burn marks, or frequently tripped breakers.
- Test GFCI and AFCI outlets and reset breakers if needed — Use the built-in test/reset buttons and label any tripping circuits.
- Secure hazardous materials and medicines in locked storage — Store cleaners, pesticides, and meds up high or in a locked cabinet.
- Check gas appliances, vents, and smell for leaks — Inspect vents for blockage; if you smell gas, leave and call emergency services.
- Review home insurance and update inventory with photos — Record valuables, serial numbers, and update coverage as needed.
