A practical checklist to set OKR- and SMART-based goals for the quarter. It guides you through reviewing the past quarter, drafting objectives and measurable key results, mapping milestones, and setting up tracking and accountability.

  1. Block 60 minutes for a focused planning session — Reserve uninterrupted time to think strategically.
  2. Prepare your planning environment and gather materials — Close distractions and collect metrics, reports, and calendar.
  3. Review last quarter's outcomes — Scan goals, projects, and performance summaries.
  4. Collect key quantitative metrics — Include revenue, users, conversion, completion rates, or KPIs.
  5. List top 3 wins and 3 lessons learned — Capture what worked, what didn't, and why.
  6. Identify 3–5 life and work focus areas for the quarter — Choose areas that matter most to progress and balance.
  7. Draft 1–3 objectives for the quarter (OKR-style) — Objectives should be bold, qualitative, and limited in number.
  8. Write each objective as a short, inspirational statement — Keep statements clear and motivating (1 sentence each).
  9. Check each objective for alignment with annual priorities — Ensure objectives support higher-level goals.
  10. Define 2–4 measurable Key Results (KRs) per objective — KRs turn objectives into measurable outcomes.
  11. Make each Key Result numeric, time-bound, and verifiable — Use numbers and clear targets (e.g., +15% by quarter-end).
  12. Limit KRs to 2–4 and avoid vanity metrics — Focus on impact metrics that indicate true progress.
  13. Translate Key Results into monthly milestones and tasks — Break targets into specific deliverables per month.
  14. Assign an owner, required resources, and success criteria for each KR — Name who’s accountable and what success looks like.
  15. Map milestones on a calendar and set deadlines — Place tasks on your quarter calendar by week or month.
  16. Set up a tracking method (dashboard, sheet, or tool) — Choose a simple dashboard to record KR progress weekly.
  17. Establish check-in cadence (weekly or biweekly) and agenda — Decide frequency, duration, and reporting format.
  18. Define course-correction triggers and decision rules — Set thresholds (e.g., 20% off target) and actions to take.
  19. Communicate goals and expectations to stakeholders — Share objectives, KRs, owners, and timelines clearly.
  20. Schedule the first review and set recurring reminders — Create calendar events and automated reminders.
